The area was first explored by Jean Nicolet in the 1600s. In the 1800s, settlements developed in earnest. The waterways were instrumental to commerce long before the railroad arrived. Many early settlers were of Polish, Scandinavian, or Belgian descent.

One can even sit in the coach's gold vinyl office chair and imagine the conversations he once had on the dial phone sitting on the desk.

The waters of Green Bay have developed into a world-class fishery the past couple of decades. One can enlist the services of a fishing guide, if desired, to scout out the hot spots where lunker smallmouth bass and big fat walleyes can be found. The Bay was also stocked with muskies years ago. In 2013, a Green Bay angler pulled a 64-inch muskellunge from Green Bay. Although it was close to a record fish, the true sportsman photographed and then released this giant fish so that someone else might have the thrill that he did.

Along the west shore of the Fox River there is the National Railroad Museum that is open year-round. Those that live here and own metro Green Bay WI real estate are fortunate to have such a treasure right in their own backyard. Prized displays at the Museum include a fully restored Pullman sleeper car from the 1920s. The futuristic "Aero Train" from the 1950s is unlike anything that your kids will have ever seen. Those that appreciate WWII history will be excited to see the very sleeper car that General Dwight D. Eisenhower used in the European Theater during the War. The museum operates an old coal-fired locomotive that pulls rail cars filled with excited visitors around a rail loop on the grounds.

The University of Wisconsin - Green Bay is in northeast Green Bay. St. Norbert College is in De Pere, on the western shore of the Fox River. 

Metro Green Bay homes for sale occasionally include mansions built along the shores of the river in the early 1900s.
